The photo portrays a time very different from the one known now. The children played - eagerly, happily and healthfully - in the street in which they lived. It was a time when boredom could not possibly exist, nor could the possibility of obesity that inflicts many of the unfortunate children of the present period.

Is it possible - for the sake of the children of now - to resurrect the conditions of that remarkably different time? Does anyone know how this could be done and under what circumstances? The publication "Different Times" contains an extensive chapter on how children played in the 1930s and how companiable play developed aspects of character and socialization. This might provide some answers.

The children are the future, and if conditions are not right for the children of now, then the future will be a sad and unfortunate place in which to live.
